MediEvil PS1: MediEvil 1 and 2, all levels, weapons and secrets
In 1998, PlayStation already has its replacement plumbers, its pilots and its spies. What it lacks is a hero who isn't one. Sony's Cambridge studio finds it in a crypt: Sir Daniel Fortesque, a skeleton knight with a dislocated jaw, who died at the first arrow of the battle and was mistakenly celebrated as a hero. One hundred years later, he rises to finally earn his legend.
Here is the complete guide MediEvil on PS1 and its sequel MediEvil 2 The story, the gameplay, the weapons, each level is described one by one with its level design, the bosses, the chalices and the real ending, then what changes with the PS4 remake and how to play the original version today.
In short: MediEvil is a 3D action-adventure game released on the PS1 in October 1998, developed by SCE Studio Cambridge. In it, you play as Sir Daniel Fortesque, a skeleton knight, through 22 levels of the kingdom of Gallowmere. Its sequel, MediEvil 2, was released in April 2000 and takes Dan to 1886 London, over 17 levels. A remake of MediEvil was released on PS4 in 2019.
The MediEvil saga in brief
The saga features two games on the first PlayStation, both developed by Sony's British studio in Cambridge. A third game, MediEvil Resurrection, was later released on the PSP, and the first episode was remade for the PS4.

MediEvil was created at Millennium Interactive, a Cambridge studio that was bought by Sony in 1997 and renamed SCE Studio Cambridge. The project was led by Chris Sorrell, with Jason Wilson in charge of game design. The initial idea was an action game in the third person set in a gothic and funny universe, somewhere between the films of Tim Burton, starting with The Nightmare Before Christmas, and the old Hammer films. The press of the time readily described it as «Ghouls 'n Ghosts in 3D».
The game was released in Europe on October 9, 1998, then in the United States on October 21, and in June 1999 in Japan. The orchestral soundtrack by Andrew Barnabas and Paul Arnold, consisting of about thirty pieces ranging from macabre waltzes to grandiose choruses, adds a lot to its charm.
The story
In 1286, the wizard Zarok raises an army of the dead against the kingdom of Gallowmere. Sir Daniel Fortesque, champion of King Peregrin, leads the charge… and falls in the first volley of arrows, a single arrow in the eye. The troops eventually push Zarok back, but the king, needing a symbol, makes Dan a hero who died in battle. He is buried with honors in his crypt.
One hundred years later, Zarok returns. His fate awakens the dead across the kingdom, and by accident, Sir Daniel with them. Skeletonized, shriveled and without his jaw, Dan no longer speaks but mutters. The souls of the true heroes, gathered in the hall of heroes, look up at him: it is the opportunity or the opportunity never to deserve his legend by crossing Gallowmere to stop Zarok.

The gameplay
MediEvil is played in third person, with the camera behind Dan, with a life bar of 300 points. Life bottles serve as a reserve: when the bar is empty, a bottle refills it. Life fountains, hidden in some levels, fill the bottles. You attack, block with a shield that wears out with each hit, jump, and you can even tear off your own arm to use it as a grappling hook.
The heart of the game is the vases. In 20 levels, a chalice fills up as Dan kills enemies. Once filled, it must be retrieved, often in a hidden corner, before the level ends. Each chalice opens a door to the hall of heroes, where an ancient champion offers a weapon, a shield, or life potions. The merchant gargoyles sell ammunition and repair the shield for gold pieces, and runes (Earth, Moon, Star, Chaos, Time) unlock locked doors. The game features 55 types of enemies.

The chalices, the hall of heroes and the true ending
Filling the 20 goblets is the game's ultimate challenge: each one opens a door in the hall of heroes, where an old champion from Gallowmere rewards Dan.
Show the rest (reveals the end of the game)
Collecting the 20 goblets changes the ending of the game. If Dan found them all, he truly earns his place among the heroes of Gallowmere and the game offers him its true ending. Otherwise, the conclusion is much more bitter. The heroes' room also makes the goblets very useful along the way: the magic bow, the hammer, or the lightning are obtained this way.
Behind the scenes: the game's sketches
Before being modeled in 3D, the villagers, the knights and the scenery of Gallowmere were first drawn on paper. A few production sketches show the studio's very «cartoonish» style.
The welcome upon his departure
In France, the press loves it: 93 % in Consoles+ and Player One, 95 % in Consoles News. MediEvil sells around 800,000 copies worldwide, of which 310,000 in Europe, where it is the most popular. It is reissued on PSP and PS3 as a downloadable version, then on PS4 and PS5.
Why play it again today?
MediEvil has a charm that few PS1 games have retained: very British humor, a Gothic art direction full of colors, and level design that constantly changes from the ascent under the rocks to the puzzles in the asylum. It has aged in terms of its handling and camera, but it ends in about ten hours and remains a very good adventure game to discover.

Chris Sorrell leaves the studio after the first episode, and James Shepherd takes over the direction of the project. MediEvil 2 is released in Europe in April 2000, priced at £19.99 in the UK, and on May 9 in the US. The game receives the BAFTA award for best console game in October 2000, a great achievement for a sequel released at the end of the life of the PS1.
The story
London, 1886. Zarok's book of spells has survived the centuries and falls into the hands of Lord Palethorn, an aristocrat who wants to seize control of England. His spell awakens the dead of the city again, and with them Sir Daniel, exposed as a curiosity in a museum in Kensington.
Dan teams up with Professor Hamilton Kift, an eccentric scientist who guides his missions from his laboratory, and with Winston Chapelmount, a helpful ghost. He crosses paths with Princess Kiya, an Egyptian mummy he falls in love with, Jack the Ripper, a vampire count, the king of the Mullocks of the sewers, and especially Dogman and Mander, Palethorn's henchmen.

- Gold pieces

The Demon
The great blue demon invoked by Palethorn. No weapon can harm him directly: another means must be found.
- Combat
- The Demon
The gameplay
The base remains the same, but everything is more flexible. The camera is finally controlled by the analog stick, and Dan can keep two weapons ready and switch between them on the fly. Firearms make their appearance, forced by Victorian London: pistol, blunderbuss and even a Gatling machine gun. The torch lights up the enemies, and the long sword can be enchanted.
The big new features are elsewhere. Dan can rest his head on a severed hand to become Dan-hand and sneak through tiny passages. He also gets, halfway through, a body reconstructed by the professor, just in time for a boxing match against the Cogneur. The commercial gargoyles make way for a camelot, the Spiv. The falls now do damage, and the progression becomes linear: you choose your next mission from the professor's projector.
The weapons
| Weapon | Type | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Short sword | Head-to-head | Found in a museum display case, breaking it with his arm |
| Long sword | Head-to-head | May be enchanted |
| Torch | Head-to-head | Kindles the fire of the enemies |
| Hammer and chisel | Head-to-head | Powerful but slow |
| Pistol | Firearm | Quick, common ammunition |

| Archery | Distance | Precise, ideal against distant enemies |
| Éclair | Magic | Return of the weapon from the first episode |
| Bras de Dan | Head-to-head | Always available |
The 17 levels of MediEvil 2
MediEvil 2 has 17 levels, several of which are divided into sections. The names in parentheses are those of the French version. The combat against the Cogneur is part of the level Dankenstein.
| # | Level | In short |

| 1 | The Museum (le Musée) | Dan wakes up in his own tomb, amidst the collections. |
| 2 | Tyrannosaurus Wrecks (the carcasses of Tyrannosaurus) | The first boss: a Tyrannosaurus skeleton reanimated in the large hall of the museum. |
| 3 | Kensington (and Kensington, the Tomb) | The streets of Kensington are plunged into darkness by the fate of Palethorn. |
| 4 | The Freakshow (the Gallery of Monsters) | A fairground and its gruesome attractions, which it is better to approach from the back so as not to be noticed. |
| 5 | Greenwich Observatory | Winston saw strange things around the observatory. |
| 6 | Kew Gardens (Jardins de Kew) | The botanical gardens, overrun with pumpkins and spitting plants. |
| 7 | Dankenstein | Dan descends into the London subway, where the professor has let loose his failed experiments. |
| 7 bis | Iron Slugger (the Cogneur) | A real boxing match, with hooks, uppercuts, head shots and parries, against an iron creature built by Palethorn. |
| 8 | Wulfrum Hall | A haunted manor, at the heart of a psychic disturbance. |
| 9 | The Count (le Comte) | The vampire count of Wulfrum Hall. |
| 10 | Whitechapel | The alleys of the East End, its cemetery and the home of the industrialist Brunel. |
| 11 | The Sewers (the sewers) | The sewers of London, the territory of the Mullocks. |
| 12 | The Time Machine (the machine that travels through time) | The professor's machine, surrounded by books that envision the future of the Empire, like a colonized Moon as early as 1910. |

| 17 | The Demon (the Demon) | The final battle against Lord Palethorn and the Demon he invoked. |
The bosses

|---|---|---|
| The carcasses of Tyrannosaurus | Tyrannosaurus Wrecks | A T-Rex skeleton in the arena; possible only with Dan's arm |
| Dogman and Mander | Naval Academy of Greenwich | Palethorn's men, to be beaten together |
| The Cogneur (Iron Slugger) | Dankenstein | A boxing match |
| The Count | Wulfrum Hall | Reflecting light on the vampire |
| Jack the Ripper | The Time Machine, the Ripper | Preventing a tragedy and overcoming it |
| Dogman and Mander | Cathedral Spires, the Descent | The revenge, in the cathedral |
| Lord Palethorn and the Demon | The Demon | The final battle |
The chalices and the end
As in the first episode, each level hides a chalice that fills up by eliminating enemies. This time, it's Professor Kift who provides Dan with new weapons. The number of chalices recovered also determines the ending: the best, most emotional one for Dan and Kiya is reserved for those who have collected all of them.
The welcome upon his departure
MediEvil 2 receives an average of 79 % on GameRankings, 8.4/10 on IGN and 7.6/10 on GameSpot. In France, Dan's voice is that of Bernard Lanneau. The game is available since January 2025 on the PlayStation Store for PS4 and PS5, priced at €9.99.
Why play it again today?
MediEvil 2 is more varied, more manageable, and better told than the first game. Victorian London, boxing fights, Dan-main, and firearms give it its own identity. While it loses some of the fairytale atmosphere of the first game, it is the ideal episode for those discovering the series today.
MediEvil 1 or MediEvil 2: which one to choose?
Both games share the same hero and the same cup mechanics, but they don't tell the same story and aren't exactly played the same way.
| MediEvil | MediEvil 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Era | Gallowmere, 1386 | London, 1886 |
| Levels | 22, partly free | 17, linear |
| Camera | Semi-fixed | On the analog stick |
| Weapons | Swords, bows, magic | Addition of firearms |
| New features | Vases and the Hall of Heroes | Dan-main, boxing match, firearms |
| Atmosphere | Gothic Conte | Victorian novel |
| Difficulty | More demanding | More accessible |
| For whom? | Fans of the original | Those who discover the series |
The best thing to do is to play the game in the order of its release: MediEvil 2 takes elements from the first game, starting with Zarok's spellbook, and the end of the first episode gives more weight to Dan's journey to London.
MediEvil PS1 or PS4 remake: what changes
In October 2019, Sony released a remake of MediEvil on the PS4 developed by Other Ocean. This is not MediEvil 2 that is being remade, but rather the first game.

| MediEvil (PS1, 1998) | MediEvil (PS4, 2019) | |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics | 3D from 1998 | Completely recreated, in high definition |
| Levels | 22 | The same, with a few adjustments |
| Music | Original soundtrack | Reorchestrated |
| Collection | 20 glasses | Vases and a new quest for lost souls |
| Taking control | The one from that time | Modernized camera and controls |
The remake closely respects the original: same story, same levels, same humor. However, it has its own artistic direction, smoother, and some players prefer the darker atmosphere and saturated colors of the PS1 version. It is also the only way to play MediEvil 2 in its original form, since the sequel never had a remake.
As for MediEvil Resurrection, released on the PSP in 2005, it is a re-telling of the first episode, with new levels and a rewritten story. There is no MediEvil 3 to date.
