How to play the best Mega Drive games in 2026?
More than thirty years after its release, the Mega Drive remains very easy to rediscover… provided you choose the right method. Here are the three options, with their advantages and limitations.
1. The original console
It’s the most authentic experience: the sound of the cartridge being inserted, the three-button controller… But you need to find a console in good condition, controllers that still work, and cartridges whose prices have risen sharply for the titles you’re looking for. On a recent TV, the picture on the cable is often blurry and you need a high-quality HDMI adapter.
2. The reprints
Sega has reissued some of its library in the form of mini consoles (Mega Drive Mini) and compilations on recent consoles. It’s convenient, but each reissue only offers a selection of a few dozen games, and you often have to juggle between several compilations to find all your classics.
3. A retro console ready to play
It’s the simplest solution for playing without hassle. A pre-loaded retro console connects via HDMI and gives access to thousands of games, without cartridges or configuration. That’s the principle of GearMaster: over 500 Mega Drive games among 20,000 games from 70 consoles, wireless controllers, and up to four players, without a subscription.
| Original console | Reissues | GearMaster | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Getting started | Cables, HDMI adapter, cartridges | Branching or downloading | HDMI + power supply, 30 seconds |
| Mega Drive games available | Those you own | A limited selection | More than 500 games included |
| Other consoles | No | Rarely | 70 consoles and the arcade |
| Cost | Used console + cartridges | Variable depending on the editions | One-time purchase, no subscription required |
The Mega Drive and 70 consoles, ready to play
No need to blow bubbles or search for a cable: plug the GearMaster into HDMI and launch Sonic 2, Streets of Rage 2 or Gunstar Heroes in just a few seconds. Up to 4 players, no subscription required.
How did we choose these games?
The Mega Drive game library features nearly a thousand games released worldwide. To compile this ranking, we considered three criteria: the impact of the game upon its release, its influence on subsequent games, and the enjoyment it still provides today. We also made sure to represent all genres, from platformers and RPGs to beat 'em ups and shooters, so everyone can find their next game to (re)discover.
